Tips for Eating While Traveling & Our Meal Plan

My sweet 4 year old in 2009

During these busy days of summer with the goings and comings, short day trips, and longer vacation traveling, you can sometimes find yourself in a food pinch.  Believe it or not, fast food isn’t always an option for food allergy sufferers (that’s a wink for all of you that don’t have that problem).  When you find yourself in the position that you need food and have few options, let me offer you a couple suggestions.

Option 1: Find the nearest grocery store.  This might seem like a strange idea if you’re just passing through, but it can actually be an excellent alternative to fast food.  You may have to drive a little further off an interstate exit, but it is often worth the little extra hassle.  You will have many more safe options from which to choose.

Option 2:  If there is no grocery store close by, try to find a convenient store, dollar store, big lots, or gas station.  You can often find some fresh fruit, like apples or bananas, at the very least.  This will at least hold you off until you can get settled into a more substantial meal.

Of course, the best option is to always be prepared with a lunch bag and/or cooler packed for those short or long drives during this vacation season.  (I’ll try to make some suggestions for allergy-friendly packable foods next week.)  Along our trips, we’ve found ourselves utilizing the best, and the occasional worst, food options.

Do you have any other suggestions for quick allergy-safe food options when traveling?
