Steel Cut Oatmeal (dairy-free)

Adapted from Alton Brown recipe found at


  • 1 tablespoons non-diary butter substitute
  • 1 cups steel cut oats
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 3/4 cups almond milk
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon, ground


Toast steel cut oats in melted non-dairy butter (Earth Balance) for 2 minutes.
Stir in 3 cups very hot water and bring to boil. Lower to simmer and allow to cook for about 25 minutes (do not stir).
Stir in 3/4 cup almond milk (or Silk coconut milk) and allow to cook another 10 minutes.
Remove from heat into bowl. Top with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Makes 4 servings.
