Recipe: Gourmet Burger

One of my favorite things about summer time is grilling out with family and friends.  And there is no better time to fire up the grill than on Memorial Day weekend.

To celebrate the occasion, I am sharing one of our favorite burger recipes.  The first time I made this burger was for lunch with my children and we used ground turkey (my husband is allergic to turkey).  They loved it and did not grumble a bit about the “hidden” veggies.  The next time I made them was for company making both turkey burgers and beef burgers.  It was the first time my husband had them and he was floored by the flavor (seriously).

When I made gourmet burgers earlier this week for blog pictures, this is the comment I received:

Mom, you need to open a restaurant and serve these burgers.  You need to pat yourself on the back.  (Would you pat yourself on the back if I didn’t tell you to?)

Since my husband has a wheat allergy, he eats his burger without a bun.  Most of the time the rest of us eat them without a bun too because I never seem to have hamburger buns or crusty bread around.

These gourmet burgers are very versatile to types of meat and various allergies without changing up the delicious flavor too much.  I hope you will try them this weekend and let me know how they turned out.

Gourmet Burger

You can use either ground turkey or lean ground beef for this recipe. Makes 4 burgers. (Allergy changes below instructions.)

Ingredients

  • 1 pounds lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 carrots
  • 1 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoons thyme, dried
  • 1 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • olive oil, extra-virgin
  • crusty bread
  • mayonnaise
  • lettuce
  • tomato

Instructions

Grate zucchini and carrot (soak up any water with a paper towel).
Combine meat, vegetables, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper and egg; form into patties. (You can also add a strong shredded cheese to the mixture, if allowed.)
Grill until cooked through, flipping once.
Brush olive oil on good quality crusty bread and place on grill for about 2 minutes. (You can use a single slice of bread on the bottom of burger or make a traditional 2 slice burger.)
Top burger with cheese of choice, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato.


Allergy Changes:
1. Egg Allergy: Leave egg out of recipe, but know that the burger may fall apart easier. Does not affect the taste. Leave out mayonnaise.
2. Dairy Allergy: Leave out cheese.
3. Wheat/Gluten Allergy: Eat without bun (trust me, it is just as delicious).
